To accompany the launch event of Dexus new building 100 Mount St, North Sydney, our interactive team was commissioned to create an artwork that leveraged their enormous LED screen. The activation needed to reflect the vibrance and development taking place in the North Sydney region, and give attendees a sense of contributing to the culture of this new building.

Scanning the entire room for movement, when at rest this artwork presented the Dexus and 100 Mount ST logo’s. However, as soon as movement was detected, the logo would spill into life. Unleashing a flock of starlings into the digital skyscape beyond. Making it beautiful, well that was entirely up to the birds… and a sprinkle of talented art direction.

The project had two large challenges. The first was creating a flock of autonomous birds, each making their own decisions based on a computer algorithm assessing, in real time, its speed, height, relationship to its flock and of course movement in the building lobby during the opening night.

The second was actually convincing them to come back. Now free, this flock of digital starlings were very hard to wrangle and programing ways to get them to return to the logos was an artform in its own right.
